The University of Arkansas offers a variety of graduate assistantships on campus that provide practical work experience with educational opportunities. In past years, as many as 40 Higher Education master’s students have held graduate assistantship positions.
The Higher Education Program faculty strongly encourage full-time students to hold graduate assistantship positions to gain the professional experience necessary to be successful in their careers. Alumni have found that it is the combination of practical work experience in an assistantship coupled with the Master’s degree that provides them with the foundation for their careers.
Master’s students interested in pursuing graduate assistantships should contact Dr. Ashley Tull (atull@uark.edu; 479-575-5257) or Dr. Jud Harbin (jharbin@uark.edu, 479-575-5007) to explore the protocol used for selecting graduate assistants. In the past, students who apply to a graduate program at UA and express an interest in an assistantship in the Division of Student Affairs come to campus in the early spring to participate in an interview. Approximately 20 assistantship offers are then typically made in March of each year.
Offices outside of the Division of Student Affairs also offer graduate assistantships, and prospective students are encouraged to contact those offices directly to explore availability. Generally, each assistantship provides a full tuition waiver (both in-state and out-of-state), a monthly stipend between $800-$1,000, and many also provide additional benefits such as parking permits, housing, meal plans, and/or professional development money.
Doctoral students may also compete for graduate assistantship positions on campus, and can follow the same process as prospective master’s students.
