Degree Requirements
The Master of Education in Higher Education is an in-person program at the University of Arkansas that meets 100 percent face-to-face on the Fayetteville campus. Our fully residential learning experience does not include online course offerings.
- Completion of a minimum total of 36 graduate semester-hour credits.
- Completion of the following required 5 courses (15 credit hours) in HIED:
- HIED 50303 — Student Affairs in Higher Education
- HIED 50403 — Student Development in Higher Education
- HIED 50803 — History and Philosophy of Higher Education
- HIED 50603 — Diversity in Higher Education
- HIED 66503 — Legal Aspects of Higher Education
- Completion of at least 5 courses (15 credit hours) of Higher Education Electives from the following:
- HIED 50703 — Management of Higher Education Institutions
- HIED 50503 — The Community College
- HIED 51003 — Higher Education in International Contexts
- HIED 53003 — Non-profit Fundraising
- HIED 5740V — Internship
- HIED 60903 — Leading Change
- HIED 61803 — Organization Development and Change in Higher Education
- HIED 63003 — University Advancement in Higher Education
- HIED 63503 — Critical Issues Facing the College or University President
- HIED 64803 — Strategic Enrollment Management
- HIED 65303 — Assessment of Institutional Effectiveness in Higher Education
- HIED 66603 — Finance and Fiscal Management
- HIED 66803 — Governance and Policy Making in Higher Education
- HIED 6990V — Seminar (Various topics)
- Completion of at least one (3 credit hours) reflective practice internship. With advisory
committee approval, full time employees may substitute an additional HIED elective.
Students may complete up to 2 additional reflective practice internships as HIED elective
course requirements.
- HIED 56403 — Reflective Practice in Higher Education and Student Affairs
- Completion of 3 credit hours in graduate level research methods. With advisor approval, students may select another
graduate level research course.
- HIED 50903 — Research in Higher Education and Student Affairs
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on all course work for the degree. No grades below C will be accepted for graduate degree credit.
- Satisfactory performance on a comprehensive examination.
- Students should also be aware of Graduate School requirements with regard to master's degrees.
